Fly-In Access

Prime Rufiji Water. Uncompromising Comfort.

Mpanga Lodge is a Luxury Wilderness property on the Rufiji River, positioned on a prime stretch downstream of Serena Mivumo where the river broadens, the current steadies, and tigerfish have room to hunt in earnest.

The water here has a different character to the upper camps : wide, deep-channelled, and less pressured. Drop-offs, structure-lined banks, and backwater pockets concentrate fish through the season, giving experienced guides reliable holding water to work across a full day on the river.

At the lodge, luxury and remoteness coexist without compromise. Comfortable accommodation, exceptional food, and attentive service sit inside a camp that feels genuinely wild : surrounded by National Park, hours from the nearest road. Evenings are quiet, lit only by the bush and a cold drink in hand.

Mpanga Lodge is operated by Luxury Wilderness, one of Tanzania's most respected camp operators. Every aspect of the guest experience : from fly selection to camp cuisine : reflects that standard. This is not a place you reach by chance. Fly-in only, fly-out better.

The Rufiji Experience

Below Serena Mivumo, the Rufiji widens and deepens considerably. This is big-water fishing : broad channels, hard current lines, and structure-laden banks that give tigerfish exactly the conditions they prefer. Deep holding lies appear with regularity, and the backwater systems are extensive.

Tigerfish on this stretch are known for fast takes and powerful, sustained fights. The Mpanga guides have fished this section for years and know every productive transition, run, and drop-off between the Serena stretch and the lower system : expect to be on fish quickly each morning.

Articulated streamers work the deep runs through current seams in the main channel. Backwater pockets fish well on surface all day : drag a popper across a calm bay and wait for the explosion. The variety of water types at Mpanga means you're rarely doing the same thing twice.

The lower Rufiji sees a fraction of the angling pressure applied upstream. Fish here are aggressive and relatively unpressured : when conditions align on this section, few destinations in Africa can match it.
