Tigerfishing's Holy Grail

Majestic Rivers sits deep in Tanzania's unspoilt Selous Wilderness : Africa's largest protected ecosystem : on wild rivers that hold a large and wild Tigerfish population most of the world has never heard of. This is tigerfishing's new frontier, and it fishes like the 80s never ended.

The fishery draws on the wild river systems feeding the Nyerere Dam, creating an extraordinary concentration of blue tigerfish rarely encountered anywhere else on the continent. Surface action runs all day long. Huge blue tigerfish corral baitfish on open flats, ambush in current seams, and launch themselves at poppers with the aggression that made the species legendary. Two guests per boat means your guide's full attention is on you : no sharing, no compromises.

Getting here is part of the adventure. The package includes a private charter flight from Dar es Salaam direct to the grass airstrip inside the reserve : no long road transfers, no layovers in bush camps. You step off the plane and into the wilderness. From that moment, the only agenda is the river.

The 7-night all-inclusive package is built to give you the full experience: multiple river systems explored by boat, peak morning and late-afternoon sessions, expert guiding, all meals, and the kind of campfire evenings by the river that don't need a screen. All fish are returned. The population stays strong. The fishing stays exceptional.

Surface Action All Day Long

🐟
Huge Blue Tigerfish
The wild rivers and Nyerere Dam system hold a large and wild Tigerfish population that the rest of the world is only beginning to discover. These aren't small fish : expect blue tigerfish from 3–6 kg regularly, with specimens exceeding 8 kg encountered each season. Surface action runs all day long, not just at dawn. The Rufiji system also holds vundu catfish and yellowfish for lighter-tackle variety.

Technique & Tackle
Guides position boats at current seams, island drop-offs, and the mouths of side channels : the ambush lies tigerfish rely on. Surface poppers and Dahlberg Divers fished on 8–10 weight rods produce explosive visual takes. Articulated streamers in chartreuse, olive and orange work when fish are holding deeper. Wire tippet (15–20 lb) is non-negotiable. Prime windows are first light and the final 90 minutes before dark.

Best Times to Fish
The optimal fishing window is early morning : from first light until approximately 09:00 : when tigerfish are actively hunting in shallow water and will aggressively take surface presentations. The second productive session runs from 16:00 until dusk. Midday sees fish retreat to deeper structure, where streamer fishing remains productive for experienced anglers.

River Conditions
The Rufiji drops to fishable levels in July following the long rains and builds to peak condition through September–December. Clarity ranges from slightly tannin-stained in July to near-gin-clear by September. The system is expansive : 5+ km of water are worked each day by boat, targeting different stretches on rotation to prevent pressure and maximize encounters. Wading is possible on select flats.

New Frontier
Nyerere Dam

From Majestic Rivers, anglers also fish the new and existing Nyerere dam : a massive impoundment that has created an entirely new tigerfish fishery on the system. The dam holds large numbers of fish, with many being caught consistently throughout the season. Whether you're working the dam walls, fishing the submerged timber, or targeting fish cruising the open water, the Nyerere dam adds a completely different dimension to your week on the Rufiji. It's big-water fishing with big-fish potential, and it's right on our doorstep.
