East Africa's Mightiest Tiger River

The Rufiji River is the backbone of Tanzania's entire southern waterway system. Flowing over 600 kilometres from the highlands to the Indian Ocean, it drains a basin of 177,000 square kilometres : making it by far the largest river system in East Africa. For tigerfish anglers, the Rufiji below Nyerere Dam is where the magic happens.

Below Stiegler's Gorge, the river exits the dam and transforms. Water that entered the reservoir as tannin-stained runoff emerges crystal-clear, filtering through the massive impoundment before spilling into the gorge below. The result is a river that looks and fishes completely differently from any other tigerfish destination in Africa. You can see the fish. You can watch the follow. You can time the strike.

The Rufiji below the dam is a fly camp river. Traditional lodge-based fishing works well for the upper stretches, but the real magic happens when you go mobile : multi-night expeditions floating downstream, setting up camp on sandbanks, and fishing water that sees almost zero angling pressure. Tiger River Lodge pioneered this model, and it remains one of the most authentic fishing experiences available in East Africa.

The river holds a healthy population of blue tigerfish, with fish averaging 3-6 kg and specimens regularly exceeding 8 kg during peak season. Surface action is consistent : tigerfish here are aggressive ambush predators that patrol current seams, island drop-offs, and the mouths of side channels. The fly fishing is technical and visual, with 8-10 weight rods and surface poppers producing explosive takes.

Three DriftBook partner lodges operate on the Rufiji: Serena Mivumo (luxury riverside lodge with dedicated tiger fishing programme), Tiger River Lodge (fly camp specialists fishing both the Rufiji and Nyerere Dam), and Rafuji Fly Camp (mobile expedition camps for hardcore river anglers). Access is via charter flight from Dar es Salaam.

Fishing the Rufiji River

The Fly Camp Model
The Rufiji's fly camp model is what makes it unique. Multi-night river trips take you downstream to stretches of water that see almost no angling pressure. Camps are set up on sandbanks : basic but comfortable : with professional guides who know every current seam and ambush point. You fish dawn to dusk, eat around the fire, and sleep to the sound of the river.

River Tigerfish
Rufiji tigerfish are classic river predators : they hold in current seams, patrol island drop-offs, and ambush baitfish at the mouths of side channels. Surface takes on poppers are explosive and visual. Fish average 3-6 kg, with the occasional specimen pushing 8-10 kg. The clear water below the dam makes sight-casting possible in many spots.

Technique & Tackle
Guides position boats at current transitions and structure edges. Surface poppers and Dahlberg Divers on 8-10 weight rods are the primary method. Articulated streamers in chartreuse, olive and orange cover deeper lies. Wire tippet (15-20 lb) is non-negotiable : tigerfish teeth cut through mono in milliseconds. Conventional anglers can also fish topwater and jerkbaits effectively.

Best Season
The Rufiji drops to fishable levels in June-July following the long rains. Clarity improves through August as sediment clears. Peak fishing runs September through November : when water is gin-clear, levels are stable, and tigerfish are at their most aggressive. December remains productive but afternoon thunderstorms become more frequent.
